PROJECT A.Y.A.T

ADVOCATING INCLUSIVE EDUCATION

Leave no one behind, four simple words yet it encompasses a deep meaning.  What is it to not to be left behind at this time of pandemic. It is revealed in several studies about the impact of Covid-19 to our learners with special needs.  These studies have concluded that the impact of COVID-19 is likely to be worse for children with disabilities and they are likely to face a greater risk of being left behind.

  • lives of our learners and their families have been drastically affected by the school closures caused by the COVID-19 outbreak. From the site of the Philippine Statistics Authority, it is revealed that the children are the most vulnerable population groups in society, especially those belonging to poor families and children with disabilities.  UNESCO also revealed that the pupils with disabilities experience a variety of barriers to education through remote-learning practices during this health crises such as COVID-19.  Some of these are: children with disabilities are often provided with less help; teachers who handle them have inadequate training; more time and resources are required for students with disabilities to actively participate in learning which includes equipment, internet access and specially designed materials and support. This makes learning more costly for students and their families.  Learners with disabilities are negatively affected by the classroom shutdown in additional ways like they lose their playtime with their classmates and friends, which are equally important for development and learning.

With these numerous barriers Project AYAT would like to make a difference. AYAT is an acronym which stands for Accommodation Yields to Acceptance and Transformation.  Project AYAT believes that this pandemic can serve as an opportunity to re-think how emergency

education planning can be inclusive of learners with special needs.  This project would like to

empower learners with special needs (LSENS) during the COVID-19 crisis.  Project is advocating that inclusive education is quality education available to all.  Project AYAT would like to empower teachers and parents on inclusive education even through distance online campaign.  Currently, inclusive education is no longer accommodating these learners in the general classroom but accommodating their needs at this time of pandemic.

Project A.Y.A.T.

Accommodation Yields To Acceptance and Transformation

Project believes that very child is unique and they can learn in their own learning style and pace. Project AYAT believes that these children with special needs can learn and succeed. Accommodating these children in the general classroom  promote acceptance, love,  transformation and success for both learners with special education needs and typical developing children.            The four “H”: Head, Hand, Hope, and Heart are its core values. These children with special needs are to be included, not just mainstreamed in schools. Project AYAT advocates on inclusive education where every learner is accepted. Project AYAT is promoting that inclusive education is not a program but a philosophy;  it is not a class for learners with special needs but a practice.; and it is not for teachers who have knowledge, training and experience with learners with special needs but a practice for all. Project AYAT promotes that supports the epitome that it takes a village to raise a child. True enough it takes a community to raise a child with special needs. The child is not only accepted at home and in school but to the whole community.

Accommodation and remediation are essential pillars of our Education Movement. The goal of remediation/intervention is to assist students to achieve expected competencies in core academic skills such as literacy and numeracy so their academic performance is increased. The adviser of these learners with special needs are working closely with them, assisting them in their modular/blended learning. If additional activity and reading materials are given if needed and necessary. Project AYAT would like to ensure success of these learners.
